Michigan State University

Over the last several years, SIOP Presidents and Executive Board members have been working diligently to increase the visibility, external relationships, and societal impact of industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology. We have streamlined and sharpened the I/O “brand.” We are actively connecting with policy makers in the federal government to advocate for I/O science and practice. Although these “top down” initiatives have been effective for advancing SIOP’s goals, they only tackle half of the system. Top down effects can “kick start” change, but lasting systemic change is emergent, from the “bottom-up.” Thus, we need to complement these ongoing macro efforts with “bottom up” initiatives that link our members with opportunities to have an impact and engage their energies to make a difference.

Four initiatives are associated with energizing the bottom-up aspects of having an impact and making a difference: policy / advocacy, infrastructure development, translational science, and engaged action.

  • Policy / advocacy – training techniques and skills for advocating to shape policy
  • Infrastructure – developing tools via mysiop that allow interested members to connect with like-minded others and to find opportunities for impact
  • Translational science – journals are science oriented; we need to translate research implications into practical knowledge and advice
  • Engaged action – the “pointy end of the stick” for emergent change
Steve will discuss initiatives relevant to these foci in which SIOP has engaged during my term as President. He will also engage GIOP members in a discussion around these issues for current and future consideration
