"Big data" continues to be a hot topic, topping the list of SIOP's Trends of 2016 (and the topic of this year's Leading Edge Consortium). Join us on June 2nd to hear James Illingworth share his insights into the importance of big data in selection and assessment. James is a contributing author to the recent SIOP Organizational Frontiers series book “Big Data at Work”. Please join us to hear James’ presentation: “Big Data and I-O Psychology: Five Things You Must Know”.

Over the last several years, I-O psychology has been addressing questions related to the definition, application, and interpretation of big data in organizations. Now that the dust has settled, what have we learned about using big data to make employment decisions? This presentation will highlight the five things every I-O scientist and practitioner must know about the current state of big data in I-O psychology.

James Illingworth, Ph.D. Biography

A. James Illingworth, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and founder of the talent management consulting firm Geode People. His research laboratory at UCF focuses on the application of new and emerging technologies to hiring and promotional assessments, including mobile devices, big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and virtual/augmented reality. Dr. Illingworth’s research has been published in the International Journal of Selection and Assessment, Industrial and Organizational Psychology: Perspectives on Science and Practice, Journal of Business Psychology, and Personality and Individual Differences. His recent work on big data includes a book chapter about the application of big data to talent selection and assessment, an article highlighting privacy issues and the potential for discrimination associated with big data in personnel selection, and two forthcoming articles discussing the legal and ethical implications of big data assessment practices.

Prior to joining UCF, Dr. Illingworth worked for 12 years as a consultant to federal government agencies (e.g., ATF, DEA, FAA, FBI, GAO) and Fortune 500 organizations (e.g., Bank of America, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Lowe’s, Tesoro, Walmart, Wells Fargo) across a wide range of industries and job levels. His areas of expertise include job analysis and competency modeling; assessment development, validation, and implementation; performance management; and the legal compliance and defensibility of personnel selection processes. Dr. Illingworth received his M.S. and Ph.D. in I-O Psychology from The University of Akron in 2004.
